Our History

In the spring of 1978, ten young ladies expressed an interest to form a drill team and go to competition at MCC.  There were no sequins, fancy costumes, or even a director. The following school year, in the fall of 1978, was the first year Midway had an official drill team.

The Goal Tenders were originally started as a spirit organization for the basketball team. They helped to support and relieve the Cheerleaders at these games. That's how the name "Goal Tenders" came to be. The girls would stand under the basketball goal to cheer and dance.  The Goal Tenders continued to perform only at basketball games until the fall of 1981.  At this time, the Goal Tenders started to perform with the band at half time of football games.  They marched with the band and even performed flag routines. They were on the field the entire half time performance.

The Goal Tenders have won countless awards and traveled all over together.  The team has been to San Antonio, South Padre, Dallas/Ft.Worth, New Orleans, Branson, Galveston, Florida, New York and many other cities across Texas.  The girls have had the opportunity to perform at a Dallas Cowboys halftime show, a Dallas Mavericks halftime, Fiesta TX, Six Flags, Disney World, Sea World, and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The Goal Tenders have grown from ten young ladies to a group of fifty and continue to uphold a winning tradition and strive to "Be World Class."
